My 13 years old Perodua Alza has been leaking oil under the hood for a while now. When I finally brought the car to my regular workshop and they quoted me 1,200 ringgit to fix the leaking gearbox. I thought that's a bit pricey so I looked for a second opinion. This other workshop quoted me RM600 instead to fix the leak and I thought, hey that's not bad.
After sending it the first time, I thought my leaky problem was solved for good. But it continued to leak, so I sent it back to the workshop. They said another part of the gearbox is leaking and it would cost me another 400 ringgit to fix them. I thought, what the hell. Perhaps I have a really beat up car. Then I thought, for sure all my leaky problems will be fixed this time. Two weeks later, guess what? It is still leaking, although it was not as bad as the first two times.
That's how I sent the car back to the same workshop last Saturday evening. And since it's already late and they don't open on Sundays, they only get to work on my car today. That's why I'm riding my bike to work today and despite the thunderstorm warning on the weather app, I had no other choice. At exactly 4:00 PM, the sky opened up and it really pours. Just my luck, I forgot to bring my raincoat today. I had it washed the last time I used it and I forgot to bring it back to work since. Needless to say, I came home freezing and soaking wet. I'll be lucky if I don't develop fever-like symptoms tomorrow.
I thought a saved a few hundred ringgits by sending my car to a new workshop but instead the repairs only got worse and I might even end up paying more than the regular workshop. Would I avoided all this mess had I stick to my regular workshop? Who knows. Hindsight is 20/20. I mean they did a pretty good job on my car before. We'll see if this Autohaus Bangi will actually fix my car for good this time around. I hate this. Wish I could just get a new car.
But you know I can't afford that. Not with my current commitments.

It's been 1 year and 3 months since Adam first sat for his computerized driving test. Between that and last week, he went to a dozen driving classes and failed his driving test twice at the Unisex Driving Academy near Nilai. The worse part was, he failed the parking test and not the on the road test where a lot of people understandably fail. Overconfident? Nervous? Only Adam knows.
Why Nilai you ask? It's the cheapest driving academy with the shortest waiting time we could find. All in all, it costs us only RM1,400 for a manual driving license. Others, especially in Selangor cost almost 2 thousand ringgit and months of waiting time.
Since we've spent so much money on his driving academy, we steeled ourselves, ignored the sunken cost fallacy and sent Adam to another driving academy to resit for another test. This one in remote Kuala Kubu Bharu, some 97 kilometers away, costs another 380 ringgit. This time I'm only willing to pay half of the fee and Adam will need to fork out his own savings. We've heard a lot of good things about P.S Samy driving academy. About how easy it is for students to pass their driving test, no matter how bad they did, and legally too.
That said, we were still nervous on the day of the test. We got out early from Semenyih that day, around 6:15 AM and got there to KKB just before 8 o'clock, on a Wednesday. We were truly relieved to hear that Adam finally passed his driving test. He can now drive our car legally around town.
Adam is one of the smartest kid we know but that doesn't mean he won't flunk real world challenges like a driving test. There's so many factor at play. If this happens to your own kid, give your best support and understanding. They will need to get that driving test anyway, despite the setbacks. You will enjoy the fruits of your labour later when your kids drive you around town (and the country) while you sit back and relax on the passenger seat.

So on Friday, I called our regular Proton service centre in Jalan Reko, requesting to send in our car for inspection and also servicing. Usually we had to book at least 3 days in advance but this time they gave us a pass. It was the wheel's bearing that's been making that noise and the good news is, it's covered under the warranty. The bad news is, it'll take 3 to 4 weeks for the spare part to arrive so they don't recommend us driving the car long distance. That means we won't be going back to our home town after all. So it's not all bad news ha ha.
With all those obstacles, maybe the universe is telling us something. Maybe it's best that we stay put and don't go anywhere this time.

Today will be the last day for our former big boss, Mr Brody (not his real name). I have a mixed feelings towards his departure. On one hand he could be an immature, strict, moody boss with unceasing demands. On the other hand, he did upgrade our computers and offer us personal development opportunities in form of courses and certificates. He also was the last boss who gave me a little raise to my current wage while the rest of us may or may have not gotten a raise. He's a mixed bunch to say the least.
One time, he couldn't find a clicker to pass to an upper management staff. I believe nobody was in the office that day, or maybe it was the weekend or something but the result was he went ballistics because of that. Apparently we did have some clickers available but they were locked in one of our drawers. By the end of the week, he asked the maintenance people to confiscate all our drawers and remove the doors to all our cabinets. Talk about throwing tantrums. I don't know what he was trying to achieve taking away or our drawers and cabinet doors, maybe to teach us a lesson or to simply show that he can. Up until today, I still didn't have my drawers back.
On the flip side, he managed to make Ms J leave the company. We thought nobody and nothing will make her leave and she will retire at the company but he did it. Ms J will be another story for another day.
That's why when he declared that he's leaving at the end of the term, I have mixed feeling but mostly relief. Said he doesn't want to be a lame duck boss who just agrees to everything the upper management say. Well, that's exactly how we felt and yet we don't have the luxury to quit like you did. I don't think the management was being unreasonable. You did cost the school millions in upgrades and new services/software.
The incoming new big boss is a local so perhaps he has more understanding and less tantrums. The management people upstairs did throw him a little farewell party during the last week. At least we get to eat some fast food for lunch that day.
I wish you good luck at your new school (probably) or in wherever you plan to work next. Your new subordinates will learn quickly enough of your management style. I hope you stop being a dick to people which you can be sometimes. All the best Brody.

I woke up today and sent my son to a leadership seminar near Bukit Jalil. It was about a 30 minute drive on a clear traffic Saturday. My car has been leaking something in the parking lot these past few weeks. I decided to get them checked today at my usual workshop in section 7, Bangi. At first I heard it was like 130 ringgit but upon confirmation, it will cost me 1,130 ringgit to disassemble the gearbox and fix the leak. Naturally I don't have that kind of money lying around so it will have to wait until next month. What's happening next month? It's August and you know what usually happens in August? We'll see. Also, I'm totally going to get a second opinion. 1k to fix a leak is a bit much in my opinion.
This week, I cancelled my Netflix subscription. I've been paying them since 2017, shared amongst 4 of my online friends. When Netflix decided that we can't share our accounts anymore, we decided to call it quits. Well. at least I quit. Technically, we can still share logins, but they made it as annoying as possible by making us click a link and enter a one time code almost every week or when using a new device. Can I live without Netflix? Absolutely. Their shows have been deteriorating in quality anyway these past few years. Lately I only have 2-3 max shows or movies on my watch list. Also, I found a website that offers Netflix shows and more for free. My wife? She's been complaining, but I'm sure she'll survive.

Today we picked up Adam from his colleague. He needed to find a dress for his prom committee duties. Why was he even on the prom committee in the first place? To gain leadership experience and extra curricular points for his resume. I thought we were just gonna rent some cheap blazer in Kajang or somewhere. Instead he brought us to Majestic Bespoke Tailor in PJ to rent a complete evening suit. Total damage - 400 ringgit. Thankfully, he paid for most of it with his own money. He does get some allowance from the scholarship every few months. The rest were money donated to him from various sources.
After that we went to 1 Utama nearby. I wanted to visit the newly refurbished Muji store there. If it's your first visit like me, it's on the ground and first floor of the old 1 Utama wing near the One World Hotel and Uniqlo outlet. There store was busy but not crazy crowded like IKEA on a sale crowded. They had the Labo section which were supposed to be special and then the Muji Green section where they sell (overpriced) plants (naturally) and finally the new Muji Café which was really crowded with constant queue and never enough table.
I wanted to taste the surprisingly affordable coffee at 9.90 and perhaps some of the overpriced cakes (RM15.00 each) but since we couldn't find anywhere to sit, I decided against it. Maybe next time when the hype dies down a bit or when they open a few more outlets with cafés as well. It was largely a disappointing visit. Instead of Muji, we had some snacks at Salon Du Chocolat nearby. I thought the name was a bit pompous and the prices were a red flag and I was proven correct. A plate of some lousy chocolate crepe cost 18 ringgit. It was very thin and unfulfilling.
Before heading home, we had an early dinner of nasi lemak at Warung Rindu near Pantai Dalam. This one rarely disappoints and the price won't burn a hole in your pocket.

Despite my silent protestation, we proceeded with the mini open house anyway. I spend some two days slowly cleaning up the house (most of it on the day before). Fortunately Adam was around and the rest of the kids lent a helping hand so we managed to turn the place spick and span.
Apart from my own family, Linda's parent came down all the way from Kelantan, so does her sister Icu from Manjung and Fida from Bentong. Combined with Linda, we had plenty of help in the kitchen. The among the food served was noodles soup, satay, hujan panas rice, masak merah chicken and chicken korma. We invited some of our friends, family and also neighbours.
The open house officially starts at 1 o'clock but my mother and my uncle from Kota Damansara arrived right around 12. Then our neighbours from the right side started coming and then the floodgates opened. We had many of Linda's friends from office coming but most of them were Adam's friends from both schools. They fill up half the living room. I only invited one colleague from work but he didn't show up.
We clearly underestimated the crowd because much of the food was gone by 3:00 PM. And the open house was supposed to end only at 7:00. Around 4 o'clock, I had to order some more satay and went to pick them up in section 7. The hundred extra satay were gone in a blink, finished by Hana's friends. Remind me to order at least 200 hundred more satay and prepare much more food next time we organize any more open houses.
It was tiring and costs a lot of money this open houses thing, even a mini one. But seeing the happy faces of my wife and Adam with their friends was

If you drive anywhere in Klang Valley during weekends these days, you will find all the roads and highways are jammed with cars. Where is everybody going? To Raya open houses of course! Ourselves not excluded. This weekend alone we had to open house invites, one from my colleague and another from Linda's.
Saturday evening, it was my new colleague, Syafiqqah's open house in Ampang. When I arrived near Taman Fairuza, we had no idea that she is Datuk Jamaluddin Ropa's daughter. He is the Pandan UMNO division leader, not that it matters of course. Despite my disdain for everything UMNO, the fact remains they're part of the unity government. Any friend of PH is a friend of mine. To be honest, I would have no problems going to a PAS member's open house had they invited me. Okay who am I'm kidding. A deluded PAS supporter/colleague maybe. A registered PAS member? Probably not.
That said, the food was good at this open house. There were grilled lambs, among other menus. Without any government contracts, wonder where he got all the budget to fund such lavish event. Perhaps donation from his loving UMNO members?
The other open house on Sunday was Linda's office mate. This one is much nearer in Cheras. When I realized it's a condo in downtown Cheras, I started to worry that parking spaces will be hard to find. True enough, there's no more visitors parking left when I arrived at the guard house. So I dropped off my family and run around to find a parking spot on the shop lots nearby. After that we waited for the lift to go up to the 22nd floor. We didn't even get to go inside the house because the place was already crowded with visitors. Lucky they provided some tables on the balcony for guests to sit and eat.
Despite the unpleasantries, the food was good including the lamb curry. Lucky for me my wife didn't stay long to chat. The colleague and her husband are reasonably well to do folks and I'm just curious why they didn't get a more spacious home like a terrace or a semi-d perhaps. They did bought another place but it's still a condo in Balakong. Maybe they just like high-rises.
Speaking of open houses, Linda and myself will be organizing our own little gathering next week. Knowing me, I'm really hesitant of having one in the first place because it is a really hard work and expensive these open house things. But since Linda and Adam keep pestering me to do one, I cannot disappoint those hopeful faces. Hopefully my guests don't complain as much as I did but if they did, do I look like I care lol.

Instead of perusing the regular Gombak - Karak - Gua Musang route, I decided to take the PLUS highway for this year's Eid celebrations. We've got to thank PMX Anwar for the free toll on all highways because otherwise we could still be plying the old route. There's much car on the road and intermittent traffic jam here and there but nothing like the regular jams that we had in Karak, Gua Musang and Kuala Krai. I don't know if I wanna use the old way again after this. In the end, we arrived in Tanah Merah after 8 and a half hours on the road including four unscheduled stops. That's a lot shorter than the usual 12 hours minimum that we spend on the road on past Eid travels.
This year we're supposed to spend some time at my mother's place in Pasir Mas. What happened was, mother recently turned our ancestral home into a rental unit. She spent nearly 10k to renovate that house, creating partitions with doors, building a simple kitchen on the balcony and what not. I warned her before that we might not be staying there much after all that but she simply brushed aside my concerns. She keep suggesting that we all sleep in one of the two rooms upstairs. Now I've lived in that house for nearly a decade and I can assure you that the two bedrooms upstairs are so hot during the day as well as at night. There's no way I would make my family suffer the indignity of staying in an oven. Consequently, my family and I spent another Eid in Tanah Merah instead.
We did visit mother in the morning on the first day of Eid. After a short rest at Matok's house, we went to Lot 173. After the renovation, it was unrecognizable from my childhood place. We can only hang around the well/fish pond area or the kitchen that has been in which half of it has been turned into mother's bedroom. The old living area is off limits since she boarded them all up with literal plywoods. I look at people's Instagram pages and see families taking Raya pictures in their nice living room and gardens. No such thing for my family because it has been transformed into a rented space. Mother would probably be happy with the 700 ringgit monthly rent that she got but at the price of not seeing her children more during festive celebrations.
Incidentally, Lina and her family also came home this time. But just like us, she refused to sleep in the upstairs bedroom because of the same reason as mine. Is it worth it mother?
We did hung around mother's place for an hour or two before retreating to Matok's place next door. Why does my grandma and mother not live together? If you read my blog I should have told you the reason but basically, they can't seem to see eye to eye on much of everything. That pretty much sums up mother. She has a knack of turning people away from her, including her family.
The rest of my extended family - my uncles, aunts, cousins, nephew and nieces along with the family gathered at Matok's place that day. The only person conspicuously missing was who else, my mother of course. Did I tell you she had a fight, not literally but more like some unpleasant exchange of words with my aunt Yati and they have not mend things up since? When I suggested that she patch things up with her sister, mother insisted that my aunt should be doing the patching up and apologizing since she's older than her. Ego? Pride? Wrath? Pick one. One thing for sure, you're not going to find my mother in this year's extended family photo.
I only heard about it a few days ago when Matok called me but there was a major quarrel between Matok and my mother (who else), after we left Pasir Mas. Apparently, mother was upset when her brother and his family didn't come visit after she ordered so much food for everybody. Naturally she brought up things about the land where Matok's house was built. I can only quietly shake my head in disbelief upon hearing that. I'm just worried that mother might be spending much of her remaining time back home alone.
In the afternoon, Lina's family and I went to Pasir Pekan near Kota Bharu to visit father's grave. Determined not to let his grave being overrun by bushes like last time, I brought along a little machete and plastic bags to clear the area. Lina's husband, Zaidi along with his son and Adam also helped. We finally went back to Tanah Merah later that evening, tired and dirty. Only one of Linda's sibling was at home this year because the others took turns to celebrate at their in-laws place.
If I want to rate my Eid celebration this year, I would give it a low two stars. Partly because of the drama surrounding my mother, also because of the unforgivingly hot weather but mainly because of the 14 hours we spent on the road on the way back. Evidently about a million other Malaysians didn't miss the chance to use the toll free road on the last day of the holiday. Remind me to book extra days off next year to avoid the rush and madness. Did I mention I'm also broke after spending all those money that I don't have?

A few days ago, we bought some flight tickets to Bangkok for December. Linda got a nice bonus so we figured out we would go to a foreign country next for a change. We already toured every state and territory in the country so it’s only natural that we venture outside. It’s going to be our first time out of the country and we don’t even have our passports made yet. Going to do that this weekend. Hopefully the queue at UTC won’t be that long.
It’s the Easter term brake at school which means 2 whole weeks without the kids and teachers, what bliss. We got a nice bank holiday lined up for us this weekend so that’s 2 free holidays for everyone. It’s a deserved break after an occasionally stressful term.

This January marks the 10 year anniversary at my current company. It’s the longest I’ve been at a single company. I’ve always said if the company treats me good, I have no reason to leave. The past 3 years have been challenging for everybody globally because of the pandemic. My company, an international school, was no exception. There was a dip in intake, contributing directly to less income. That’s why when the company announced that they could afford to give us one month bonus for the past two years and no increments during the pandemic, I totally understood. At least there’s still some bonus although not as much as the previous eight years at the company.
Now the worst of the pandemic has gone and left us. School intake has returned back to normal and the company shouldn’t be using that excuse this year right? We shall have to wait and see in August.
A few weeks ago there was a regional invitational badminton tournament held at the school. The ICT department was tasked with the scoreboard system and had to come to the school for the entire weekend. Now working weekends are no stranger to us. There’s this little sneaky line in our employment letter (or is it job description?) that says we should be prepared to work overtime including weekends when necessary. Most of the time, I would have no qualms about working weekends. I’ve done them loads of times in the past. At the very least I could make some extra cash by claiming the double-rate overtime. So what’s changed?
It all started on Sunday morning, during the last day of the tournament. Breakfast was provided for participants, their staff members and we assume all the support staff including us. As my colleague was helping himself to some breakfast that morning, one of the big bosses in charge of the tournament said we shouldn’t be helping ourselves to breakfast like that. He said the participants paid a lot of money to join, including for the food. I thought wow. There we were sacrificing our weekend with our loved ones coming to work for a little money and then being treated like shit by him.
Managing the scoreboard system and then live stream video was no mean feat. Had they hired a real professional to do all that, it would easily cost them tens of thousands of ringgit. But there we were, the entire department working our ass off and then being treated like crap. What is a little breakfast compared to the time and energy that we poured into the tournament? I have half a good mind to tell him my thoughts about him at the time but I knew better. It’s not the first time he treated members of our department like garbage and I suspect it won’t be the last. We did have our breakfast a few minutes later when he left. Still it left a bitter aftertaste in our mouth.
That got me thinking, at this stage of my life, should I subject to such indignation? Do I want to spend my entire working career at such a company/environment? No I’m not saying I’m beneath working overtime or doing support jobs like that but sometimes when you encounter uncouth people like him, it makes you re-evaluate your career choices. My career path at the company seems quite straightforward (or so I thought) at the moment. I am currently the deputy to the system admin and someday when he leaves, I might be considered for the job. Then again I see the pressure and stress that he goes through almost every day. It’s not good for the mental and physical health. Do I really want to be in his shoes someday? At the moment I’m not so sure. Especially with the current top management.
The dream is to become a full stack developer, work remotely from anywhere and earn a shitload of money. That’s why I’ve been dabbing my fingers into some coding lately although I quickly realized, learning a whole new field of knowledge at my age is not a walk in the park. Sure I have my basics in programming, it’s the energy and time required to learn new things that’s really hard. I’m usually always so tired after work in the evening, especially if I do any bit of workouts beforehand. All of my kids are still in school and I have transport duty for 3/4 of them every day after work. I’d be lucky to find any time to devote myself to coding during weekends. There’s always so much chores and distractions during those precious 2 days of the week. Besides, I also would want to rest some time right?
So you see, despite the occasional apprehensions that I feel at work, my choices for a career change are quite limited at the moment. Sure I could look for a similar job at another school or company but there’s no guarantee I would be treated better, heck it could even be worse. That’s why I’m trying my best to put all that ill-feeling behind me, at least for now. Especially when I still have many mouths to feed and kids to get through college. It’s not the right time to make rash decisions that could affect our livelihood.

My lawyers said I’ll have to write something here or this blog will be forfeited. I am obliged to comply.
It is coincidently the first day of Ramadan, 2023. For the 43 year old me, it’s just another fasting month. I can take the fasting anytime, no problem. It’s the sleepiness from waking up and not eating that’s challenging. Ramadan Mubarak everyone.
